New rezoning request for gas station, restaurant

A rezoning request for the property at 16766 Mountain Road (west of the Montpelier Veterinary Hospital) has been submitted to Hanover County.

Read the zoning request that was submitted to the County.

The request was made to change to current zoning of A-1 Agricultural to B-3 General Business.

The petitioner wants to install ten gas pumps, a sandwich/coffee shop restaurant, and convert the existing house dwelling to office space.

This plan is in a very preliminary stage as of this writing. It will not go before the Hanover County Planning Commission until March or April at the earliest.

The petitioner will also be holding a community meeting at some point for the general public.

We will post new information as we get it.

Comprehensive Plan Meeting Results

Quite the meeting at Randoph Macon yesterday. The full Board of Supervisors, the full School Board and the Hanover Economic Development Authority were present at the “big table”. The event was filmed/recorded and the video should be on their FaceBook page.

Angela Kelly-Wiececk, as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, led the meeting and discussion.

David Maloney, Director of Hanover’s Planning Department had the major presentation with lot’s of data.

Bottom line – nothing from yesterday’s meeting caused any concern for the Montpelier area.

Mr. Maloney did point out that our Suburban Service Area (runs along Rt. 1 and branches over to the eastern part of the county) is about 2,000 acres short of projected needs over the LONG term of the Comprehensive Plan. What is suspected will happen from this is this area will be expanded, but not in our direction.

Mr. Maloney did state that our rural areas are huge attractions to new citizens who move here. He offered an anecdote about folks who move to the suburban areas of Hanover often consider that moving to a rural county, and there is real value to the county to have a good mix of residential, commercial, industrial AND rural areas to attract new taxpayers to our county.

Angela Kelly-Wiececk suggested that each District form focus groups to get citizen input for any amendments to the Comp. Plan. At the end, and by formal motion, the Planning Commission was assigned the project of coming up with recommendations, using revised stats from Mr. Maloney’s Planning Dept.
